Digital Photography Essentials

Digital Photography Essentials is a condensed class for beginners looking to better understand how to use their camera and generally improve their “eye” for photography. The course materials are designed with a practical and easy-to-understand approach to using your camera for casual portraits, travel, and other events. Students will learn key concepts, designed in a practical and easy to understand manner through lecture, exercises, and casual discussion. Class size is limited to keep things interactive and fun!

Going on a holiday trip you’ve planned all year? Want to better document your life in Hong Kong or improve your family photos? This class is for you.

What sort of topics will be covered?

i)   What you see is what you take: Exposure and using manual controls.
ii)  How to shop and what to buy: Get the right lens and camera body to suit your needs.
iii) Composition: Arranging elements for impressive photos.
iv)  Software: Managing and improving your digital images.
v)   Tips and Tricks: Useful info to give your photos some extra spunk.

Is a DSLR camera required?

It is recommended to have a DSLR camera or a “point and shoot” camera with manual functions (eg. Canon G9, G10, G11, Olympus EP-1, Panasonic LX3, GF1…). If you do not have either of these, just let us know when you register so that we can try to arrange a “lender” camera for you during the class. Those planning to buy their first DSLR camera will also find this useful in choosing the right camera and understanding how to use it.

Some comments from past students…

Ken’s photography class was exactly what I needed in order to understand how to use my DSLR camera and to take better pictures. His descriptive and clear presentation explained all of my camera’s parts and ways to improve my photography skills in a simple and easy way. The class was small so Ken has a lot of time to answer my questions thoroughly and assist us while practicing in the classroom. I also loved the RAW studio’s relaxed and modern atmosphere. I highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn more about DSLR cameras and some helpful tips on better picture taking!… Sarah

The material covered was exactly what I was seeking. Ken made the subject matter fun and easy to understand. And in the relaxed environment of the RAW studio, it was more of a roundtable discussion than a lecture. By the end of the session, I was able to unlock the potential of my Canon G10… Joe

I really enjoyed the workshop and would definitely recommend it to amateur photographers. The topics covered were detailed and intricate but easy to understand at the same time. The RAW studio is also a great space for the class. I can’t wait to start practicing the techniques that I learned on my Canon G9 and Leica D-Lux 4!… Rene

Short and crisp class to get you started with photography. The Random Art Workshop is a good venue for this small and interactive class. Great instructor, lots of good tips… Jacinta

Explanation and presentation was very easy to follow….have gotten more comfortable with using manual mode. The venue was casual and cozy…will definitely recommend.… MinJung

Would definitely recommend…it’s a class, but the session is not too serious. It’s more or less like friends sharing so it’s very easy to absorb.… Vega

I would strongly recommend this class to anyone who’s just started out with photography! I was a complete newbie but after Kenneth’s workshop, I’m now brave enough to shoot using the manual controls of my DSLR. The class was fun and interactive – with clear explanations using examples of his own work, which made all the technical bits really easy to understand. He also provided tips on which camera to purchase and where, and endless photography resources. RAW was cosy, comfortable and convenient – the perfect venue for small group classes. It was such an enjoyment learning from someone who is so passionate about his work. I cannot wait to start shooting!… Karen L

Wow, I never knew I could learn so much about my camera and photography in 3 hours! The configurations and settings on my DSLR camera, which seemed so complicated and overwhelming, are finally all making sense. This class really boosted my interested in photography!… Amelia

Ken’s class was extremely helpful in helping me grasp the essential basic skills to use my new digital SLR. Ken was extremely engaging, patient, knowledgeable and passionate about photography! Highly recommend the class to those interested in getting a bit more serious about photography!… Sonia

…I have been passionate about photography and I have some very good pictures but sadly they are all on “auto mode “ with not much personal contribution. I always wanted to do more with my camera but never had the confidence or the basic concept clarity to experiment with them. Your class taught concepts in a simplistic manner without technical jargon which can be intimidating for a beginner! I must admit what I learned in a few hours at RAW would have taken me months if I were to do it on my own. Thank you for your patience and your guidance!… Veena

Highly recommended. Kenneth helped deconstruct the meaning and interrelationship of Aperture, Shutter and ISO in a highly practical, visual and engaging course. He provided lots of useful tips which I can’t wait to test out!… Karen C

It was a wonderful refreshing course for me. I was really surprised to learn so much in 3 hours too. I found the presentation both understandable and engaging, unlike a previous course I took before.… Joansa
