Phoebe, Josh and Buzz
Phoebe and Josh wanted pictures with their Hong Kong Dog Rescue poodle to make the cover of their family’s Christmas cards this year. I headed to Pok Fu Lam to take some shots of them at sunset.

Wanchai dog park with Larry
Meet Larry. Larry is an older dog and scared us a bit recently when he got really really sick. He’s since bounced back in a big way, so Julie, Jason and I were able to take him for some portraits at the dog park in Wanchai. Big dude was tough to keep up with running around, chewing up grass, jumping on other dogs, and chomping on crackers cookie-monster-style.
I am loving the wide-angle prime lens for pet photography, who says a 20mm isn’t good for portraits?

Hong Kong Dog Rescue
A few weeks ago I was listening to a podcast that urged all photographers to volunteer their services to the community. It was also around this time when I started following a few pet photographers so I decided to google up some local animal shelters. Thats when I stumbled upon Hong Kong Dog Rescue. Established in 2002, HKDR set out to try to save a small portion of the thousands of dogs that are destroyed in Hong Kong every year. Under local law, dogs typically caught by government dog catchers are killed 4 days after capture if not claimed. The numbers are staggering, making any visit to the dog kennels heartbreaking. Fortunately, the organization is supported by a tremendously hard-working and dedicated foundation of staff and volunteers.
After getting in touch with Mark at HKDR, I began volunteering to photograph dogs for their website. These portraits give them their best shot at being adopted and joining a normal home. Pet photography was never my bread and butter and probably won’t be anytime soon but I’m hoping my small contributions will help.
If you get the chance, please visit the HKDR display at the Lane Crawford Home Store in Pacific Place (through Oct 8). They’ve got some really cool merchandise on sale which, along with donations, are the only sources of funding. A few of my images are displayed on the screen there too.
And if you are interested in adopting or volunteering PLEASE check out the website which has a ton of information.
