October in numbers.

October has been a crazy month. I did 20 separate shoots for 11 different clients, which is just sort of ridiculous! Don’t get me wrong, work is an absolute blessing that I am completely grateful for, and I’d be lucky if only half the year could be  like October. For sure November won’t be though since I’ll be visiting home for a REAL Thanksgiving in NY =) I can’t wait.

Anyways, falling behind on sleep and my to-do list always reminds me of Chris Rock’s bit on Careers vs. Jobs. Its scary to think how many life lessons I learn from Chris Rock, but the dude is just smart as hell. There ain’t enough time in the day!

Digital Photography Essentials

Screen shot 2009-10-31 at 10.58.58 PM

Last night was the first Digital Photography Essentials workshop at the Random Art Workshop in Causeway Bay. Big thanks to Kelly, Jacinta, Karen and Tosh for coming to class armed with some good questions and plenty of energy on a Friday after work. It was great to see a wide range of skills amongst students, and it nearly brought a tear to my eye to see a small family of Nikons spread out across the table (D60, D5000, D90, D200, D700)!!!

the smartest guy in the room.

Those that hang around me long enough (especially since leaving my last job) know that I am a big fan of self development. I try to learn from, at least in my opinion, the smartest people. People like Brian Tracy, Wayne Dyer, Neale Donald Walsch. They are not photographers, yet I still try to apply what I learn from them to my photography business.

Thats why when I started following Atlanta based photographer Zack Arias, I knew I had to learn from him. He tends not only to share his incredible work with the world, but also his genuine thoughts as they relate to life, family, money, and creativity. It is hard for me to put into words (funny how since moving to HK my English gets worse yet my Chinese is stagnant), but I’ll just get to the point.

The real motivation for this entry was the below video found at this Zack Arias blog post. If you learn something from Derrick, consider making a donation to him on Zack’s blog. I did.
