Angela, full-time Mom, China

Portraiture has always been my favorite genre of photography. One of the things that I love the most about shooting portraits is being able to meet all the different people that I photograph.
Hong Kong brings such a diverse group of people from all over the world into a relatively small community. Here are a few that I met recently.

Maternity and newborn baby portrait session

A few years ago, I met Stephanie in Hong Kong while photographing an event in Central. Like me, her and her husband Tom’s move to Hong Kong from the US marked a chapter in their developing careers. Earlier this year, Stephanie was 7-months pregnant and had asked me to help photograph a maternity portrait session in her home. We took our time to plan our shots which would eventually be slightly fine-art in nature and a little less photojournalistic than my other portraiture.
Last April, in the early hours of Sunday morning, Stephanie gave birth to beautiful baby Gabriel. Here are some of the pregnancy and newborn baby shots (taken at 8 weeks).

Portrait session with DJ Gruv
Recently I had been contacted by Hong Kong’s DJ Gruv for a portrait session. Gruv represents Maryland but he’s been out in Hong Kong for years and has done gigs all over Asia. He had been looking to get some images done for media and promotional purposes, so last Friday we spent a few hours in the studio along with his wife of 10 years, Bonnie. Here are some of my favorite shots.

family portraits with Venice and Wilson
On January 7th, 2009 Venice and Wilson celebrated their 4th anniversary with a family portrait session in Hong Kong Park. Their adorable 11 month old baby SikSik also came along for the shoot.
I had scouted a few locations in the park that I liked the day before, but beyond that we also revisited a few spots near the marriage registry office to reenact some shots and poses from their original wedding photos from four years ago. Awwww! great idea!

Wanchai dog park with Larry
Meet Larry. Larry is an older dog and scared us a bit recently when he got really really sick. He’s since bounced back in a big way, so Julie, Jason and I were able to take him for some portraits at the dog park in Wanchai. Big dude was tough to keep up with running around, chewing up grass, jumping on other dogs, and chomping on crackers cookie-monster-style.
I am loving the wide-angle prime lens for pet photography, who says a 20mm isn’t good for portraits?
